Zmanda Introduces ZCloud Storage Cloud
Zmanda™, the leader in open source backup and recovery software, today announced ZCloud, an open API, that will radically simplify the development of backup-to-cloud applications by providing a consistent and easy interface for storage cloud and backup software vendors. Zmanda is the sponsor of the ZCloud open source community project, and has also released an open source reference implementation of ZCloud.
By enabling this API, a storage cloud immediately becomes a potential destination of ever-growing eco-system of backup-to-cloud applications, including Amanda - the world’s most popular open source backup project. The storage cloud vendor does not need to worry about specifics of backup and recovery process. Instead they can continue to focus on scalability and robustness of their core offering.
“Backup-to-Cloud is a key application of storage clouds. Mezeo is enabling a growing eco-system of applications to be compatible with our cloud storage platform,” said Steve Lesem, president and CEO, Mezeo Software, a cloud storage platform provider. “We are excited about the ZCloud API, as it will help us to easily integrate backup software applications with our cloud without requiring cloud storage service provider developers to understand the specifics of any particular backup software.”
“Eucalyptus enables private and hybrid clouds for enterprise data centers. Backup to internal storage clouds instead of ad-hoc storage devices provides great flexibility to IT managers,” said Woody Rollins, chief executive officer, Eucalyptus Systems, Inc., “ZCloud API is a welcome next step in the evolving cloud based infrastructure landscape and we look forward to the integration between the Eucalyptus Walrus Storage System and ZCloud.”
As more and more businesses discover the flexibility and ease of using storage clouds for their secondary and tertiary storage, backup-to-cloud has become a must-have feature for all backup software. By supporting ZCloud API, a backup software vendor can immediately use a growing choice of storage clouds, including Amazon S3, as well as private storage clouds as a destination of its backup archives.
“Storage clouds represent a radical shift in secondary and tertiary storage. With increasing Internet bandwidth and economies of scale of storage cloud vendors, IT managers will realize dramatic cost and complexity reduction for their off-site backup needs,” said Chander Kant, chief executive officer, Zmanda. “By normalizing the idiosyncrasies of specific clouds, ZCloud enables a vibrant ecosystem needed to serve this growing demand.”
The CloudWorld conference will be held in conjunction with OpenSourceWorld at Moscone Center West in San Francisco, California from August 12-13, 2009. CloudWorld will bring together the buyers and sellers of Web-centric software, infrastructure and services designed to drive the widespread deployment of cloud computing in the data center. Kant will deliver a presentation entitled, Practical Considerations for Backing Up to the Cloud, on Thursday, August 13, 2009 from 9:15 AM – 10:00 AM local time. Kant will deliver a second presentation during OpenSourceWorld entitled Amanda Open Source Backup - On the Ground Experiences, which will take place on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 from 1:15 pm-1:45 pm. Zmanda’s suite of open source solutions will be on display in booth #424 in the main exhibit hall.

I’ve been backing up to both S3 and Mosso Cloud Files for a few months now programmaticaly using the SMEStorage.com Open API which supports several storage clouds - it has worked well for us and it would be interesting to tie their API in with ZCloud - their API is available at http://code.google.com/p/smestorage/
