Dell is planning to buy 3PAR, which is a leading global provider of high-end data storage. Dell thinks that by acquiring 3PAR, it will be able to compete with other big organizations like HP in the cloud computing market.

After hearing the news that 3PAR has accepted the Dell’s bid of $27 a share, HP also increased its bid amount to $30 a share, that is $2 billion.

Certainly, one of the most popular uses for SaaS has been online backup.  And the reasons for this are obvious. Online backup is simply faster, more convenient, more secure, and more cost effective than the old-fashioned way.
When thinking about online backup, most of us just think about the backup process itself.  (How easy is it is to send those files offsite on a daily basis)  This is natural, because the automation aspect of online backup offers the most immediate benefits.  By installing the software, you instantly save 30 minutes or more of work every day.
However, there is another side to the story.

Even more important than the backups process itself… is the recovery process.  After all, there’s no point in backing up your data if you can’t get the files when you need them.
What you need to ask – when selecting a SaaS backup provider - is “How fast do I need to get my data back in an emergency?”

Imagine a scenario where your servers have crashed, and you need to get your data back.  For many companies, it would not be that big of a deal to wait a day or so for the recovery downloads to complete.For these companies, traditional online backups work fine.

Other types of businesses, however, have much more stringent uptime requirements.  In the event of an unexpected failure, every hour offline could cost thousands of dollars.  And increasingly, we’re beginning to see companies operating on a 24/7 schedule.
In this case, you would probably need to have an emergency facility with replicated servers.  That way, you could instantly switch over without stopping.

And then, there are the companies in between. For them, unexpected downtime is very expensive.  However, their whole world will not collapse if they go offline for a few minutes.

For these companies, a high-availability service might be overkill.  Instead, a “rapid-recovery” cloud backup service might be more practical.  These types of systems allow you to begin using your data within minutes… even while your backups are still downloading.  (This is a relatively new technology, but growing quickly in popularity)
Another cloud based alternative for minimizing downtime would be to archive certain types of files.  Emails are perfect for this, since they will never change once they’ve been received.

By archiving your e-mail servers to the cloud, employees will have an alternative way to access their e-mail data if your primary servers ever go down.  This is especially important, since email is usually the main method of communication for most businesses.

When it comes to disaster protection for your business, fast recovery speeds and minimized downtime are important factors to consider. When choosing a cloud backup provider, keep these considerations in mind.

NASDAQ plans to launch Data-on-Demand in the second half of 2010 to provide easy and flexible access to large amounts of detailed historical NASDAQ Level 1 trade and quote data for all U.S.-listed securities. Tick data is increasingly used in quantitative environments for back testing of algorithmic trading strategies. As the securities trading industry pushes the limits of high frequency trading, algorithms require ever more rigorous back testing and fine tuning based on actual historical data. Obtaining and collecting tick data can be onerous and time-consuming as firms are required to establish feeds and maintain large amounts of data on-hand. By providing this data on-demand and allowing it to be purchased on-line, Data-on-Demand will make it easier than ever for firms to back-test their strategies.

Unlike traditional means of market data delivery, such as feeds and files, on-demand market data distribution gives applications a way to cherry pick the specific subset of data that the application needs with pinpoint accuracy. Instead of combing through very large data sets of historical tick data, developers will be able to program their applications to select very specific data sets and obtain them on-demand and process them instantly. Data-on-Demand will also allow clients to download large tick data subsets on a scheduled basis.

The release of these innovative tools is further demonstration of Cloud Linux’s promise to help service providers increase stability and control of the server environment for more efficient and profitable operations.
