North Bridge Venture Partners and the 38 leading cloud organizations today announced the launch of its 2nd annual Future of Cloud Computing Survey. The survey will capture current perceptions, sentiments and future expectations of cloud computing from industry experts, users and vendors of cloud software, support and services. The goal of the survey is to measure how and to what extent the cloud is being used, the key drivers of growth and change in the cloud, and the impact the cloud is having on IT and business operations. The survey will explore areas such as current use, drivers, barriers, and future plans regarding cloud computing. The survey will also reveal profile information on the types of cloud services currently being used.

Now open to the general public, the survey has a target close date of June 1. North Bridge will be revealing the results at its prestigious Cloud Leadership Dinner on June 19, and then make them available online at www.northbridge.com/software .

“Cloud computing has become an integral component to virtually every organization’s IT strategy, which is why it is critical to understand how this trend is evolving over time,” said Michael Skok, General Partner, North Bridge Venture Partners. “Last year’s survey created a benchmark on the state of the cloud computing industry. With the 2012 survey, we can now measure movement that is being made, as well as the future direction of cloud computing. With nearly 40 leading cloud computing organizations on board to provide valuable insight, we expect to obtain an unbiased perspective from users and vendors that will enable us to understand what it will take to move the meter on cloud adoption.”

The Future of Cloud Computing Survey was launched in 2011 to set benchmarks from which to study and track user and buying trends, similar to the North Bridge Future of Open Source Survey, now in its 6th year. The Future of Cloud Computing Survey has been endorsed, and will be distributed by 38 other collaborators who have also joined the forum on the Future of Cloud.

    Amazon and Salesforce expected to join G-Cloud 2.0 http://www.oncloudcomputing.com/en/2012/04/amazon-and-salesforce-expected-to-join-g-cloud-20/ http://www.oncloudcomputing.com/en/2012/04/amazon-and-salesforce-expected-to-join-g-cloud-20/#comments Fri, 20 Apr 2012 18:09:58 +0000 admin http://www.oncloudcomputing.com/en/?p=3321

Amazon and Salesforce are odds-on to join the UK government’s G-Cloud and start serving civil servants with hosted computing, storage and ERP from May, reports the The Register.

The companies have been in talks to join G-Cloud, with government officials driving the programme having to reassure the firms’ legal people on their obligations under the G-Cloud’s terms and conditions.

The duo had passed on G-Cloud 1.0 which launched in February, over concerns about their legal obligations and responsibilities on things such as data audits.

Newly named G-Cloud leader Denise McDonagh revealed the development during a UKAuthority.com webcast on Thursday in response to The Register. McDonagh, who is also head of IT at the Home Office, was named on Friday as the successor to incumbent Chris Chant, who is retiring from the civil service after just 18 months in charge of G-Cloud.

Asked whether Amazon and Salesforce will be on the next version of G-Cloud, which currently gives hefty representation to existing suppliers of government IT like Microsoft, IBM and BT who have followed these two into cloud, McDonagh stopped short of saying she’d be disappointed if they didn’t sign up, but continued: “I fully expect them to be on G-Cloud 2.”

Commenting on the reason they hadn’t joined up in February, she said: “There were some challenges. There was some language that gave their legal people a headache on the right to audit data. Since then we have spoken to the people at Amazon and Salesforce to explain the practicalities…therefore they are much more at ease with what we are asking them to do.”

Amazon and Salesforce are synonymous with cloud computing. Amazon EC2 and S3 deliver hosted compute and storage at cut-throat prices while its APIs are soaking into business and consumer apps. Since spinning up in late 2006, Amazon has become the undisputed leader: with nearly 1tn data objects that sit in its silo and rapid expansion in the last 12 months. Everybody from OpenStack to Microsoft are racing to catch it.

Gemini Mobile Technologies KK (Gemini) announced today that it will exhibit Cloudian® at the 3rd Cloud Computing Expo in Tokyo. Cloudian is a packaged software product which enables the building of cloud storage systems that are fully compliant with Amazon S3 REST API.

At the Cloudian booth, Cloudian customers and partners from around the world will share use cases of Cloudian, S3 ecosystem, Big Data, cloud solutions, next-generation clouds, and M2M. Fourteen companies will present, including Nifty, Rakuten, Aplix, Vodafone, Ericsson, and Value Added Resellers such as Creationline Inc. and Core Micro Systems Inc.

    Background

Big Data is a term that was used first by Internet engineers to refer to the simultaneous, sudden rush of various types of data in enormous quantities. While the data items themselves may be small, there are massive amounts of them which need to be processed at high speed simultaneously, such as in the case of Twitter, which processes over 10 TB of data per day.

Big Data was beyond the scope of assumptions for conventional database technologies and required robust, costly data storage equipment. Cloud computing technologies provide solutions for Big Data with large-scale, distributed, parallel data processing systems using low-cost commodity servers. Cloud technologies are used for many cloud services such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook, to name a few.

Amazon S3 is the leading cloud storage service, and its interface (S3 REST API) is public. S3 API has become the de-facto standard for cloud storage. Today the rapidly growing S3 Ecosystem already has hundreds of services and applications and almost a trillion objects stored.

Worldwide, the S3 Ecosystem is expanding from public cloud services used by the general public into private clouds used inside corporations and group organizations, hybrid public and private clouds used for data backup, and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication.

Gemini’s Cloudian is a packaged software product based on Big Data cloud computing technology, and allows service providers and enterprises to fully leverage the existing applications and services in the S3 Ecosystem. Cloudian has a global proven track record of commercial use for cloud storage services, including “Nifty Cloud Storage” in Japan. The software product can be also used for enterprise private clouds and hybrid clouds.

Rackspace the biggest competitor to Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) in the market for Web-based data centers, reached a record high after sales and profit topped analysts’ estimates.

Rackspace shares climbed 8.9 percent to $53.60 at 9:32 a.m. in New York. Earlier it touched $54.09 for the highest intraday price since Aug. 8, 2008, when the company first traded publicly.

The company runs a fleet of data centers, letting customers store their websites and applications on its servers. It competes with the Amazon Web Services business in the public- cloud market, where customers rent computing power along with related services. Rackspace’s revenue in that area jumped 86 percent last quarter to $58.5 million, the San Antonio-based company said yesterday in a statement. Sales in the traditional dedicated server business, where the company manages specific machines for customers, rose 23 percent to $224.8 million.

Net income jumped 85 percent to $25 million, or 18 cents a share, from $13.5 million, or 10 cents, a year earlier. Revenue climbed 32 percent to $283.3 million. Analysts on average predicted profit of 15 cents and sales of about $281 million, according to a Bloomberg survey.

ServInt Previews Pricing Structure for Cloud-Based Java Hosting Platform Jelastic under Strong Beta Demand http://www.oncloudcomputing.com/en/2012/02/servint-previews-pricing-structure-for-cloud-based-java-hosting-platform-jelastic-under-strong-beta-demand/ http://www.oncloudcomputing.com/en/2012/02/servint-previews-pricing-structure-for-cloud-based-java-hosting-platform-jelastic-under-strong-beta-demand/#comments Thu, 16 Feb 2012 12:22:01 +0000 admin http://www.oncloudcomputing.com/en/?p=3312

ServInt, a pioneering provider of managed hosting for enterprises worldwide, today announced the pricing methodology behind Jelastic, its soon-to-be-released, cloud-based Java development platform.

Jelastic is unique in that it is the first true pay-as-you-go, platform-as-a-service Java development environment that requires no special coding for applications developed inside its environment. With Jelastic, users simply click a button to set up auto-scaling Java applications in seconds. No installation or configuration is needed, as Jelastic automatically installs, configures and interconnects server instances with selected software stacks. No API coding is required, and Jelastic is compatible with a wide range of industry-standard software stacks.

Typical cloud cost structures that pervade the market today are based on a “per-machine” pricing model that requires planning and constant monitoring. In contrast, Jelastic will launch using an auto-scaling model in which customers pay for actual memory and CPU consumed by the Java app, referred to as a “near-utility” model. Jelastic runs on metered “cloudlets,” a term that ServInt defines as 128MB RAM and ~200 MHz CPU core. This dynamic pricing means that an application can minimize costs during periods of slow user activity and maximize speed, efficiency and uptime during peak — both without customer intervention. ServInt will launch Jelastic with a cloudlet-hour price of only two cents per hour.

“Combining Jelastic’s cutting-edge technology with ServInt’s 17 years of hosting know-how has put us on a path to provide great things for our customers,” said ServInt COO Christian Dawson. “We think the near-utility approach we’re taking with Jelastic on pricing and provisioning is going to break the platform-as-a-service industry wide open. The product is miles ahead of its competitors on technological features, and now we’re adding game-changing, customer-friendly pricing to the mix. Jelastic is a truly revolutionary cloud product, and we can’t wait to bring it to market in March.”

Few organizations have moved to cloud computing — the delivery of computing as a service from remote centers — and of those that have, many are disappointed with the results, a survey published found.

Fewer than one in five organizations questioned have outsourced the hosting of their applications to cloud computing providers, with two-thirds in early discussions, in trials or not considering a move, said computer security firm Symantec.

Many firms are looking at cloud computing providers such as Amazon, Microsoft, Salesforce, Google or Rackspace to help them increase their scale without installing expensive hardware and software locally.

IT research firm Forrester has forecast that the global cloud computing market will grow from $41 billion this year to $241 billion in 2020.

    CloudBerry Lab releases CloudBerry Backup version 2.3 http://www.oncloudcomputing.com/en/2011/08/cloudberry-lab-releases-cloudberry-backup-version-23/ http://www.oncloudcomputing.com/en/2011/08/cloudberry-lab-releases-cloudberry-backup-version-23/#comments Wed, 03 Aug 2011 09:17:28 +0000 admin http://www.oncloudcomputing.com/en/?p=3301

CloudBerry Lab has released CloudBerry Backup version 2.3 — an application that allows users to backup their data online to their cloud storage accounts such as Amazon S3, Windows Azure and Google Storage.

Disaster recovery planning is often times an afterthought that comes to light when disaster strikes. Very seldom do companies fully recover from loss of critical data which could lead to loss of business. CloudBerry Backup provides a powerful Backup and Restore product designed to leverage Amazon S3 reliable and secure online storage to make your disaster recovery plan simple, reliable, and affordable.

New version of CloudBerry Backup comes with an ability to back up only the modified blocks of the files to the Amazon S3 making the overall backup process faster and more efficient.  Block Level Backup is useful if you want to copy large files such as SQL Server Backup files, MS Exchange Database, Outlook PST files and virtual machine images.
CloudBerry Backup leverages native Amazon S3 Copy API and allows the users to access the files with any other tools. Furthermore, CloudBerry Backup is the only client program available on the market that doesn’t require any additional server software to process the modified blocks.

Currently the block level backup feature will only work for the files greater than 5 GB. This is the limitation of Amazon S3 copy API. Once this limitation is removed on the Amazon side CloudBerry Backup will automatically support smaller files.
CloudBerry Lab is working on the Block Level Backup functionality for smaller files as part of the Advanced Backup Mode with the encryption, compression and versioning support. This functionality is expected to get out in Fall 2011.

CloudBerry Backup is also available as a Windows Home Server 2011 (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/windowshomeserver/default.mspx ) and Small Business Server 2011 Essentials add-on. It integrates with the WHS console and offers scheduled backup to cloud storage, hosted on Amazon S3.

CloudBerry Backup is designed to work on Windows XP/Vista/7 and Windows Server 2003/2008. Command line interface allows partners and advanced computer users integrate backup and restore plans with other routines.

CloudBerry S3 Backup for Windows costs $29.99(US) for a single-user license. Volume discounts are available. CloudBerry Backup will be offered without charge to students, educational institutions and non-profit organizations. You will continue to pay Amazon directly for their S3 charges.

Conference Name: 2nd International Conference on Cloud Computing and Services Science (CLOSER 2012)

    Venue: Porto, Portugal

    Event Date: 18-21 April, 2012

    SCOPE

The 2nd International Conference on Cloud Computing and Services Science, CLOSER 2012, focuses on the emerging area of Cloud Computing, inspired by some latest advances that concern the infrastructure, operations, and available services through the global network. Further, the conference considers as essential the link to Services Science, acknowledging the service-orientation in most current IT-driven collaborations. The conference is nevertheless not about the union of these two (already broad) fields, but about Cloud Computing where we are also interested in how Services Science can provide theory, methods and techniques to design, analyze, manage, market etc. Cloud Computing.

Emerging Enterprise Technologies are profoundly changing the way we think of IT - from economics and efficiency to process and usage models. Many organizations look to the “externalized” IT systems and services as a potential cost-savings advantage by moving internally hosted IT services to external providers. Other organizations view the “external” IT as potential disaster recovery systems or as on-demand capacity to boost business continuity and customer service levels. We need to take a closer look, discerning what emerging enterprise technologies are and how they can catalyze creativity and produce a competitive advantage. There is hence a new wave of interest in ‘Externalization of IT’ - anything as a service (including Software as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service), On Demand delivery, outsourcing, and so on. This emerging facilitation and way of utilizing services through IT is what we are referring to as Cloud Computing.

The four perspectives in which we are addressing the area of Cloud Computing in this conference are: (i) Fundamentals of Cloud Computing; (ii) Services Science foundations for Cloud Computing; (iii) Cloud Computing platforms and applications; (iv) Cloud Computing enabling technology.

    Conference Areas

Each of these topic areas is expanded below but the sub-topics list is not exhaustive. Papers may address one or more of the listed sub-topics, although authors should not feel limited by them. CA Technologies will be presenting on the risks of cloud computing. Other focus areas include the Arcot solution for fraud prevention and advanced authentication and other key solutions that are critical for the financial sector.

CA Technologies has been providing cutting edge solutions in cloud computing, infrastructure management, service management and security and mainframe to some of the most prominent organizations in the MENA region. These offerings will be showcased at MEFTEC 2011.

Hisham Malak, Sales Director, CA MENA said, “The financial market has witnessed rapid growth over the years across various operations- retail, consumer, corporate, and others. This has been fuelled by market demand and the changes in the dynamics of the global financial markets and driven by the rising competitiveness within the sector.  All this has lead to tremendous business opportunities for which CA Technologies is well positioned.”

Most financial institutions have avoided cloud computing because of the perceived risks involved. Gregor Petri, Advisor, Lean IT and Cloud Computing, CA Technologies will be making a special presentation, titled ‘The Risks of Cloud Computing’ at MEFTEC on May 31st. It will concentrate on the issues involved in using the cloud and how to mitigate such risks. A regular keynote speaker at industry events throughout Europe, Gregor has been named as one of the Top 100 Bloggers on Cloud Computing by the Cloud Computing Journal.

“CA Technologies is a trusted advisor for many financial institutions worldwide and in the region. MEFTEC is a perfect platform for CA Technologies to solidify its position in the market and share its latest offerings. For instance, among the newest solutions we will be sharing will be those of Arcot- one of CA Technologies latest acquisitions. Arcot provides cutting edge solutions in the areas of fraud detection, fraud prevention and advanced authentication to banks as both on premise and as a cloud service.” Mr. Malak added.

With some of the most important representation of the financial and banking industries decision makers at MEFTEC, CA technologies will be demonstrating some of its flagship solutions including:
