Novell tool to secure data and workloads in the cloud

Novell tool to secure data and workloads in the cloud

novell-ent-svr-amd64

Novell’s perspective on the cloud is we envision ourselves as an arms vendor to the cloud. We are not going to be off creating a Novell cloud; we don’t believe we hold that place in the market. Rather, we see people who are: Google, Amazon, Rackspace. They’re going to need infrastructure tools to run their clouds, which is basically the next generation of what a data center is. Because we made a strategic decision as a business on selling to the cloud providers, that’s a small target market, so we can have traditional partners focus on selling to the end customers today, and we can make a small investment in selling to cloud providers and building that relationship because it’s a small universe of people.

Novell transitioning to a very indirect form of business, where our operating system goes to market to the ISVs, our management tools go to market through solution providers or cloud vendors, our security offering goes to market through cloud providers. You’re starting to see an evolution in Novell as an infrastructure/plumbing vendor.

Leapfrog to the ‘cloud,’ Asian companies urged

Leapfrog to the ‘cloud,’ Asian companies urged

Unlike in the typical server-PC environment, cloud computing is based in the Internet where tools and services are accessed by users. One of the conveniences it offers is that users don’t need to have expertise or control over the technology infrastructure residing in the cloud. Salesforce.com, as a company that has built its name and fortune in cloud computing, has beefed up its capability by establishing a new data center in the island-nation of Singapore.  salesforce did not reveal the investment it made to put the facility, but its magnitude is shown by the fact that it is the company’s only third data center and the first outside of its US home base. Officials said the company has been quite busy expanding its presence in Asia by opening up a few offices around the region and launching infrastructures such as a call center in India. In the Philippines, the company is represented by tech conglomerate IPVG. Salesforce.com said it is now ready to take Asia by its horn. Polly Summer, the company’s “chief adoption officer,” said cloud computing is perfect for Asian companies who want to get started but do not have the resources to maintain a conventional IT system.

Cloud computing, however, is not just for start-up companies but also for large enterprises who want to streamline their IT system and improve their bottom line,” he said, as he pointed out that big-time Asian firm such as Tata, and Pacnet have signed up with Salesforce.com. loud computing, however, is not just for start-up companies but also for large enterprises who want to streamline their IT system and improve their bottom line,” he said, as he pointed out that big-time Asian firm such as Tata, and Pacnet have signed up with Salesforce.com.

AMD narrows net loss in second quarter

AMD narrows net loss in second quarter

AMD reported a net loss of US$330 million, or $0.49 per share, during the quarter that ended on June 27. That compares to a net loss of $1.195 billion a year ago and a net loss of $416 million in the first quarter of 2009. In an effort to reach profitability, AMD in the first quarter spun off its manufacturing assets into a separate company called GlobalFoundries, which unloaded close to $1.1 billion in debt from AMD’s books. GlobalFoundries is a joint venture with investment firm Advanced Technology Investment Company, which is owned by the Abu Dhabi government. The company reported revenue for the second quarter of 2009 of $1.184 billion, which decreased 13 percent compared to the second quarter of 2008 and was flat compared to $1.177 billion during the first quarter of 2009. Revenue beat analyst expectations of $1.13 billion.

One promising product for upcoming quarters is the six-core Istanbul chip, which was released on June 1. Istanbul chips are designed for cloud computing installations, which Meyer expects to be one of the bright spots in the struggling enterprise market. Many lightweight laptops with AMD’s low-power Athlon Neo chips are due in the third quarter. AMD also plans to launch the Tigris platform for mainstream laptops in the second half of the year. Meyer said it was hard to predict whether Windows 7 would be a big driver of chip demand in the near term. It might provide an opportunity to sell more expensive systems with separate graphics cards

Cloud computing gives more services to small businesses

Cloud computing gives more services to small businesses

“Cloud computing makes it possible for them to access enterprise-class capabilities with low initial investment and massive scalability,” Mr Berger commented. Speaking to Network World, he said this is because it allows firms to avoid the cost of investing in extra hardware and software. As a result, it can be effectively balanced against the needs and budgets of smaller companies.

This, he stated, means that cloud computing can be a “very wise” investment for these companies. He added that this allow small and medium-sized businesses to perform at a level that will enable them to compete with much larger rivals. Despite the advantages outlined by Mr Berger, Gartner Research believes that many companies in Australia are choosing to shun cloud computing programmes. The analyst said this marks a contrast with many firms in other countries, reports Computer World.

ORACLE LAUNCHES “SAAS FOR ISVS”

ORACLE LAUNCHES “SAAS FOR ISVS”

Instead of making an upfront investment for perpetual licenses, the new monthly licensing model allows SaaS ISVs to scale their investment in Oracle technology with their company growth and end-user demand. Committed to providing the leading technology platform for Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Cloud Computing partners, Oracle today launched a new commercial licensing model that enables Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to purchase license and support for components of the Oracle Platform for SaaS on a monthly basis.

The new monthly option, called SaaS for ISVs, is available to any ISV interested in delivering a SaaS application in a one-to-many commercial deployment on Oracle Database, Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle Application Server. The Leading Platform for SaaS and Cloud-Based Services The Oracle Platform for SaaS includes Oracle Database, Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle Enterprise Manager, and Oracle VM, and is a comprehensive, open and integrated set of technologies that allows ISVs to build, deploy and manage SaaS and cloud-based applications. This software platform uses Oracle Grid Computing technologies to enable ISVs to deliver SaaS and cloud-based services to multiple enterprise customers, while fully delivering on their requirements of scalability, high performance, high availability, integration, security and customization. ISVs, hosting service providers and system integrators also receive business and technology support via a designated Oracle SaaS Program for partners.

“Oracle has been active in the SaaS market for several years, selling our own SaaS offerings and working closely with an extensive ecosystem of SaaS partners - including ISVs, SIs and Managed Hosting Partners,” said Judson Althoff, Senior Vice President, Worldwide Alliances & Channels at Oracle. “With the new monthly licensing model, not only can ISVs leverage the leading platform for SaaS, they can also scale their investment to meet the evolving demands of their business. The combined Oracle Platform for SaaS and licensing options deliver the power and flexibility ISVs need to compete and win in today’s global SaaS marketplace.”
